Meta is giving EU users the power to disconnect their Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger accounts to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Users can now choose how their information is shared, enabling a more personalized experience. This move aligns with DMA's aim to foster fairness in digital markets.

Meta, under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, has declared a groundbreaking move for EU users, allowing them to sever the link between their Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger accounts. This initiative is in response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the European Union, emphasizing the company's commitment to compliance.

In March, as the DMA takes effect, EU users will gain the flexibility to utilize Meta's services without sharing their information across platforms. Tim Lamb, Meta's Director of Competition and Regulatory, highlighted that those who have previously connected their accounts can still do so. However, an essential change lies in the ability to manage Instagram and Facebook accounts independently, preventing cross-account information usage.

For Facebook Messenger users, the choice is extended to either continue with their Facebook account or establish a stand-alone Messenger account. Creating a new Messenger account allows users to enjoy core services like private messaging, chat, voice, and video calling, all without intertwining with their Facebook information.

In the realm of Facebook Marketplace, users can opt for an experience using their Facebook information or maintain privacy by keeping it separate. The company clarified that the existing Marketplace experience remains unchanged for those who choose the former, while the latter can still browse listings and engage in buying and selling activities.

Meta plans to roll out notifications in the coming weeks, prompting users to decide whether they want to share information between Meta services. This flexibility extends to gamers on Facebook, who can choose a gaming experience with or without their Facebook information. Furthermore, users in the EU, EEA, and Switzerland can now enjoy Instagram and Facebook ad-free by subscribing, ensuring their information remains untouched for advertising purposes.

The move aligns with the DMA's objectives to promote fairness and competition in digital markets. Meta reassures its commitment to complying with the DMA in the EU, emphasizing its dedication to delivering value to users in the region.
