According to a
Home Department official, Mizoram has provided shelter to approximately 8,861
refugees from violence-stricken Manipur. These individuals have been dispersed
across 10 out of the 11 districts in Mizoram.
The outbreak of
clashes between two ethnic communities in Manipur on May 3 led to a mass
exodus, with over 45,000 people fleeing the state. As a result, Mizoram has
been experiencing a continuous influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs)
from its neighboring state.
The capital
district of Aizawl is accommodating the highest number of refugees, followed by
the districts of Kolasib and Saitual. These three districts share borders with
Manipur, making them easily accessible for those seeking refuge. Recognizing
the urgent need for assistance, Mizoram's Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, visited
New Delhi on May 26 and appealed to the central government for financial
support amounting to ₹10 crore. This aid would enable the state to extend
proper assistance to the IDPs.
In letters
addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah,
Zoramthanga highlighted Mizoram's existing efforts in providing refuge. The
state has already accommodated 35,000 refugees from Myanmar in various relief
camps. Additionally, recent conflicts in neighboring Bangladesh have caused
thousands of refugees from that country to seek sanctuary in Mizoram as well.
In response to
the escalating situation, the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) has decided
to designate the Central YMA Hall in Tuikhuahtlang, Aizawl, as a transit camp
for the refugees. This arrangement will be in place until the Government of
Mizoram can establish a more permanent relief camp for the IDPs. Lalngheta
Ralte, the President of CYMA, expressed the anticipation of more refugees
arriving from Manipur, including women and children who have fled to Mizoram
with no belongings or relatives in the state.
To ensure
adequate support, the Central YMA has also called upon all other YMA branches
in different localities to prepare their halls for receiving displaced persons.
This collaborative effort aims to provide a safe and temporary haven for those
seeking refuge within Mizoram's borders.
