A diplomatic visit turned unpleasant as Moldovan President Sandu's dog bit Austrian President Van der Bellen during their stroll at the Presidential Palace in Chişinău. Sandu's dog, Codruț, reacted unexpectedly when Van der Bellen attempted to pet him, snapping at the Austrian President's right hand.

Sandu later apologized, attributing the incident to Codruț feeling overwhelmed by the crowd. Van der Bellen, despite the bite, maintained his fondness for dogs, acknowledging Codruț's nervousness due to the bustling environment.

The Austrian President's hand appeared bandaged in subsequent pictures alongside Sandu and Slovenian President Musar. Van der Bellen addressed the incident in a video, empathizing with the dog's anxious behavior amidst the crowd.

Sandu had adopted Codruț, a former stray, in early 2023 after the dog endured an accident resulting in the loss of a leg. The incident overshadowed the diplomatic discussions regarding Moldova's aspirations to join the European Union during the presidential meeting.

The occurrence draws parallels to past incidents involving presidential pets. Notably, US President Joe Biden's German Shepherd, Commander, garnered attention for attacking Secret Service members and staff, leading to his removal from the White House. This incident adds to the catalog of presidential pet actions making headlines.
