Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian businessman of Pakistani descent,
is named in the fourth supplementary charge sheet issued by Mumbai's Crime
Branch in the notorious 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case. David Coleman Headley,
the alleged mastermind of the attacks, is said to have used Rana as a key
supporter while he did reconnaissance for the assault.
The lengthy chargesheet (405 pages) details Rana's ten-day hotel stay in Mumbai prior to the terrorist attack. A passport photocopy presented by Rana during his hotel stay (November 11-21, 2008) is included. Hotel records and other evidence have also been included in the chargesheet.
Tahawwur Rana is currently detained in the United States
for his involvement in the murder of a journalist. The extradition process to
India is said to be on the horizon, with Ujjwal Nikam, the special public
prosecutor of the 26/11 case, emphasizing that the timing hinges on the US
administration's decisions.
The US State Department has acknowledged the pending matter
of Rana's extradition. Previously, a US court denied Rana's writ of habeas
corpus, potentially paving the way for his extradition to India, where he faces
charges related to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed 175 lives.
Rana is accused of conspiring with his childhood friend
David Coleman Headley to assist the Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba in
orchestrating the attacks. Headley, who had pleaded guilty, testified against
Rana.
175 people were killed in the 26/11 Mumbai assaults that
began in the evening of November 26, 2008. The Leopold Cafe, Taj Mahal Palace
Hotel, The Trident Hotel, Central Station, and the Nariman House were all hit
in the attack, permanently altering the city's landscape.
