Mumbai has increased security at religious sites following a credible terror threat. Police are conducting mock drills and urging temples to report suspicious activities. These measures come as the city prepares for festivals and upcoming state assembly elections.
In response to credible intelligence regarding a potential terrorist attack, Mumbai has heightened its security measures, particularly at religious sites and crowded areas. The Mumbai Police have issued directives to all temples in the city, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard the public and maintain peace, especially as the city gears up for the festive season.
Officials confirmed that police personnel have been tasked with conducting "mock drills" at key locations, including temples and busy marketplaces, to ensure preparedness. The Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) are also focusing on strengthening security protocols within their designated areas. Prominent religious leaders, such as Sada Sarvankar, chairman of the Siddhivinayak Temple Trust, have echoed the call for increased vigilance, stating that temple security will be enhanced in cooperation with the police.
Recent exercises included a mock drill at Crawford Market, a bustling area that houses several important religious sites. Authorities clarified that these drills are standard practice, especially during significant festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra, and Diwali, which attract large crowds.
