Neeraj Chopra, India's
golden boy, etched his name in history by securing the gold medal at the World
Athletics Championships. The javelin sensation, who previously won the Tokyo
Olympics, had set his sights on breaking the 90m barrier in the final but came
agonizingly close with a best throw of 88.17m.
Chopra maintained his lead
from the second round until the very end, securing his first-ever World
Athletics Championships gold. Arshad Nadeem, the Commonwealth Games champion,
claimed silver with a throw of 87.82m, while Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech
Republic clinched bronze with a distance of 86.67m.
Speaking at the post-match
conference, the 25-year-old Neeraj expressed his desire to exceed the 90m mark,
saying, "I wanted to throw more than 90m tonight. But it needs all parts
of the puzzle to be there. I couldn't put it all together this evening. Maybe
next time."
Despite the pressure and a
tight schedule, with just one day for recovery, Neeraj maintained his focus.
"After the second round, I was thinking of pushing myself because I knew
that I could get a better throw. But there is a lot of pressure on technique
and speed," he explained.
Notably, Neeraj wasn't the only Indian competing in the final. Kishore Jena and DP Manu gave commendable performances, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
This gold medal adds to
Neeraj's already impressive collection, including a silver at the 2022 World
Championships, gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, and triumph at the Asian
Games in 2018.
Looking ahead, Neeraj
Chopra is gearing up for the Asian Games in Hangzhou, scheduled from September
23 to October 8. This competition will be the final major event for the
talented javelin thrower in 2023.
