Made in Heaven proved to be a directorial and creative triumph, showcasing emerging talents. Scripted collaboratively by Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Alankrita Shrivastava, co-helmed by Prashant Nair, and masterfully overseen by showrunner Nitya Mehra, this series, led by two wedding planners, seamlessly united storytelling and craftsmanship.
Joining the ranks of directors for Season 2 is Neeraj Ghaywan, a recent addition who stepped in for Prashant Nair, occupied with directing the recently premiered Netflix India series, Trial By Fire. Ghaywan's familiarity with making his mark on subsequent chapters of esteemed dramas is evident, having also taken the reins from Vikramaditya Motwane for Netflix India's Sacred Games Season 2 in 2019.
Ghaywan readily acknowledges the seamless integration into Made in Heaven's exclusively female directors' team, attributing it to a shared worldview, value system, and political alignment. "It naturally becomes challenging otherwise. Allow me to illustrate this with an example. During the production of Masaan (2015), there arose a moment where a character used a derogatory term – 'maal' – while referring to someone's Facebook page. Without hesitation, Varun Grover (the writer) and I rushed to intervene, advising, 'Choose a different word, avoid that one.' A script might be brilliantly crafted, but if its essence doesn't resonate with my personal outlook or political stance, the synergy falters."
Neeraj shared that his experience working with the women directors on Made in Heaven Season 2 served as a valuable learning opportunity. "My perspective was influenced by a male gaze that prevented me from truly understanding Tara (portrayed by Sobhita Dhulipala). I questioned whether men might perceive her as a gold-digger. Yet, in reality, she's asserting her rightful claim and striving for financial independence, which is entirely justified.
The collaborative process naturally involves extensive brainstorming when five directors of their caliber convene to shape a show. Yet, one wonders about the decision-making behind assigning specific episodes to each director. For instance, in Season 1, Alankrita assumed the directorial role for three episodes, including the finale. Alankrita elaborated, "It's an organic and fluid process. Certain episodes align thematically with a particular director's sensibilities. However, we've never encountered a scenario where I've asserted my desire for an episode, and Zoya has countered with a refusal."
Neeraj emphasized that their collaboration extended to covering for each other whenever necessary. "Alankrita and I exchanged one of our episodes. Zoya and Nitya also swapped roles. We were even ready to step in for one another as directors. During my battle with COVID, Zoya directed in my place, and the same reciprocity occurred. This exemplifies the level of synchronization we achieved."
Made in Heaven Season 2 is set to premiere this Thursday, August 10, on Prime Video.
