In connection with the 2019 Ramalingam murder case, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted searches at 21 different locations spread across 9 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, with a particular focus on Tiruchirappalli.
These searches took place on a Sunday and were part of an ongoing investigation into the murder case of Ramalingam, who was known for his opposition to the activities of leaders affiliated with the Popular Front of India (PFI), who were allegedly engaged in converting Hindus to Islam through their Dawah work.
Sources revealed that the NIA conducted the searches based on intelligence inputs, targeting premises and hideouts of individuals with suspected links to the banned organisation, PFI. The murder case was initially registered on February 6, 2019, at Thiruvidaimaruthur Police Station in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.
The charges filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) included sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 294(b) (abusing), and 307 (attempt to murder), regarding the conspiracy and killing of Ramalingam on February 5, 2019. After the investigation concluded, on August 2, 2021, the NIA successfully arrested Rahman Sadiq (41), a key conspirator who had been on the run since the incident.
The NIA's previous statement indicated that the motive behind Ramalingam's murder was his opposition to the Dawah work conducted by leaders associated with the PFI) These leaders were allegedly involved in converting Hindus to Islam. Ramalingam's opposition to their activities led to his tragic demise.
The NIA also revealed that the killing had several other motives. One of them was to create terror among a particular section of people, with the intention of creating enmity between different religious communities. Additionally, Ramalingam was targeted as an act of repayment for his actions.
It is alleged that he had removed the "taqiyah" (skull cap) worn by one of the accused individuals and applied "thiruneer" (sacred ash) on the forehead of another accused, Mohammed Farooq, to portray the equality of all religions.
On March 7, 2019, the NIA re-registered the case and took over the investigation. Subsequently, on August 2, 2019, the NIA filed a charge sheet against 18 individuals who were allegedly involved in the murder.
The arrest of Rahman Sadiq, who was identified as the administrator of PFI's Dawah work in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, has been a significant breakthrough for the NIA.
