Noor Shekhawat, a 30-year-old individual from Rajasthan, has made history by becoming the first person in the state to be issued a birth certificate reflecting her gender as transgender.
As per reports, Noor took this step to combat the persistent discrimination faced by the transgender community. Her parents had kept her transgender identity a secret, and due to the lack of provisions for recording transgender status, her birth certificate initially labeled her as male.
Despite facing discrimination, Noor is determined to pursue her dreams. She had to drop out of college earlier due to the hostile environment but plans to continue her studies in B.Com at Rajasthan University. She expressed her desire to even pursue a Ph.D. in the future. Alongside her academic aspirations, Noor runs an NGO dedicated to helping transgender individuals.
Noor thanked the Jaipur Municipal Corporation for their support in the process of obtaining her updated birth certificate. The director of the statistics and economics department also confirmed that there is a provision for transgender individuals to apply for such certificates.
Noor hopes that her case inspires others in the LGBTQ community to come forward and seek equal rights. However, she mentioned that despite receiving congratulations from strangers, her friends and family reacted differently. She faced disheartening responses from some friends, and her parents made hurtful remarks about her identity after an earthquake in the region.
Despite the challenges, Noor remains steadfast in her determination to break barriers and foster a more accepting society for future generations. She believes that every citizen deserves equal rights, and her courage in embracing her true identity aims to pave the way for a more inclusive future.
