DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, 33, was killed responding to a shooting at Atlanta’s CDC campus. The gunman, who targeted the building with multiple rifles, died in a shootout with police. Rose, a father of two with another child on the way, had joined the force in 2024.

Officer David Rose, 33, of the DeKalb County Police Department, was fatally shot on Friday while responding to an active shooter incident at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) campus in Atlanta, Georgia. Interim Police Chief Greg Padrick confirmed that Rose was the sole fatality among law enforcement, with no civilian injuries reported.
Rose, who joined the department in September 2024, is survived by his pregnant wife and two children. Chief Padrick described him as deeply committed to serving the community and urged the public to keep his family and colleagues in their thoughts during this period of grief.
The shooter, described as a white male, died during a gun battle with police. Authorities located his body on the second floor of the CVC building inside Emory University. The attack triggered a campus lockdown and a swift multi-agency response involving the Atlanta Police Department.
Witnesses reported that the gunman arrived at the CDC building carrying a backpack, from which he retrieved multiple rifles before opening fire on the facility. Law enforcement later revealed that the shooter specifically targeted the CDC building.
According to CNN, investigators learned from the suspect’s father that the man was ill and blamed his condition on COVID-19 vaccines he had received. The father also warned police that his son was suicidal before the attack. The shooter’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
