Oscar Surprises: Margot Robbie Responds to Barbie Snub, Downey and Gosling Weigh In

The 96th Academy Awards nominations brought a mix of joy and disappointment, with Barbie earning eight nods but facing controversy due to the absence of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig. Robbie, gracefully responding to the Oscar snub, received support from fellow actors like Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Robert Downey Jr.
In
a surprising turn of events, the 96th
Academy Awards nominations unveiled on January 23rd brought both
celebration and disappointment. Notably, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things,
Killers of the Flower Moon, and Maestro took center stage with multiple nods.
However, the absence of Barbie's leading actress, Margot Robbie, and director
Greta Gerwig in the nominations sparked an unexpected wave of reactions.
Expressing
her sentiments, Margot Robbie, known for her role in Barbie, demonstrated a
commendable level of grace. "There is no reason to feel bad when you know
that you are blessed by God," shared Robbie, emphasizing her positive
outlook despite the snub. She further endorsed Gerwig's directorial prowess,
stating, "What she has done happens only once in a career and a lifetime."
Hollywood
actors rallied behind Robbie, questioning the criteria for nominations and
expressing their discontent. Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken in Barbie, pointed out
the indispensable roles of both Robbie and Gerwig in making the film a success.
"Without Barbie, Ken does not exist. Similarly, without Greta, the Barbie
film does not exist," remarked Gosling, highlighting their substantial
contributions.
Simu Liu, another co-star from Barbie, echoed the disappointment, offering insights into the challenges Robbie and Gerwig faced in bringing the film to fruition. Liu emphasized their impact on the cinematic landscape, stating, "They started a movement, touched the world, and reinvigorated the cinema. They deserve everything. They ARE everything."

Even Robert Downey Jr., nominated for Oppenheimer, weighed in on Robbie's omission, suggesting she deserves more credit. Despite the controversy, Barbie managed to secure an impressive eight nominations at the Oscars, spanning various categories such as Best Motion Picture, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Song.
