An Army officer's fiancée in Odisha has alleged police brutality and sexual assault during her custody, prompting outrage from leaders like Rahul Gandhi and VK Singh. The Odisha Police have suspended five officers involved and are under pressure to ensure justice, as the incident raises serious concerns about police conduct and safety for women.
In a shocking incident that has sparked widespread condemnation, an Indian Army officer’s fiancée has accused Odisha police of severe misconduct, including sexual assault, while she was in custody at the Bharatpur police station. Prominent leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and former Army chief VK Singh have voiced their outrage, demanding accountability and justice.
The woman alleged that while seeking help for her fiancé, she faced brutal treatment from police personnel. According to her account, after objecting to the unlawful detention of her fiancé, two female officers assaulted her. She claimed a male officer then physically assaulted her, repeatedly kicking her and making lewd gestures.
In response to the allegations, the Odisha Police Crime Branch has registered a case against five officers involved, including the inspector in charge, who have since been suspended. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi assured the public that strict action would be taken against those responsible, describing the incident as a “heinous crime.”
Rahul Gandhi criticized the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party government, linking the incident to a broader trend of rising violence against women under its administration. He questioned the safety of citizens when injustice thrives within governmental systems. Priyanka Gandhi echoed these sentiments, highlighting the brutality faced by the woman who sought assistance.
VK Singh, a retired Army general, called for immediate action against the officers involved, urging that the concerns of the victim—an Army officer's daughter—be taken seriously. He emphasized the need for a systemic change in how police treat women and uphold the law.
The National Commission for Women has also intervened, seeking a report from the state DGP on the incident. Meanwhile, Odisha's Deputy CM Pravati Parida visited the victim in the hospital, promising support and reiterating the government’s commitment to justice.
