A group of US lawmakers has petitioned the Biden administration, seeking a pause in aid to Pakistan. They express worry over whether US assistance might have contributed to human rights abuses in Pakistan. The lawmakers emphasize the need for Pakistan to restore constitutional order through fair elections before receiving future aid.

In their communication to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, these legislators highlight apprehensions regarding Pakistan's efforts to reinforce blasphemy laws. They express concern that these amendments could further restrict the freedoms of religious minorities. Notably, the bill passed despite lacking the President's signature.

Referencing the August 16th incident where a mob attacked churches and homes of Christians, lawmakers stress ongoing religious persecution in Pakistan. They fear that if this bill becomes law, it could intensify restrictions on religious freedom.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar leads this initiative, supported by lawmakers advocating for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Their concern aligns with the US Commission on International Religious Freedom's 2023 report, which underscores deteriorating religious freedom in Pakistan. The report mentions targeted attacks, killings, violence, and blasphemy-related allegations against minorities.

Despite assurances from Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister, concerns persist over the misuse of stringent blasphemy laws, particularly against Hindu and Christian communities. The Biden administration urges Islamabad to investigate the August 16th incident and emphasizes the unacceptable nature of violence and threats.

Amidst this, Pakistan, facing financial strain, awaits a tranche of US aid amid IMF revisions to its loan requirements. Pakistan has borrowed extensively and faces challenges securing additional funds due to reduced remittance projections and economic growth downgrades by the IMF.

In conclusion, the US lawmakers' appeal underscores concerns regarding Pakistan's human rights situation and religious freedom. This move has heightened scrutiny over US assistance and calls for reforms in Pakistan's legal frameworks to protect minority rights.
