Pakistan's cricketing scene is abuzz with controversy as fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani's fiery response over his omission from the Asia Cup squad has ignited a heated debate.
The young pacer, who had been a consistent presence in the national team until last year, expressed his frustration through social media, taking aim at former cricketer Rashid Latif and cricket reporters alike.
Dahani's absence from the newly-announced Afghanistan ODIs and Asia Cup squads, revealed by the recently reappointed chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, came as a surprise to many. The squads featured some reshuffling, with Faheem Ashraf's return after a two-year hiatus and the omission of Shan Masood raising eyebrows. However, it was Dahani's absence that sparked the most controversy.
Responding to a tweet by Rashid Latif sharing List A stats of Pakistan's fast bowlers, Dahani's now-deleted tweet questioned his exclusion, raising doubts about his status as a Pakistan pacer. Another deleted tweet targeted journalists and cricket experts, accusing them of ignoring his snub and calling out the lack of coverage on his statistics.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management, reportedly infuriated by Dahani's outburst, is considering taking action against him. A tweet from Samaa TV reporter Qadir Khwaja suggested that the PCB does not tolerate dissent against journalists or the selection committee.
Dahani's reaction comes at a crucial juncture as the Pakistan cricket team gears up for the Asia Cup. The team is set to assemble in Hambantota on August 18 for preparation, with players in Pakistan participating in a three-day camp from August 14 to 16 at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. The Asia Cup holds significant importance as the team prepares for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
