Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, reiterated his call for meaningful peace talks with India, stressing that unless serious issues are addressed through dialogue, the two countries cannot be "normal neighbours." His offer to engage in talks was made during the inaugural session of the Pakistan Minerals Summit in Islamabad.

This isn't the first time Sharif extended an olive branch to India. He had previously proposed a similar dialogue during an interview with AlArabiya news channel six months ago. However, no significant discussions have taken place between the two countries since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, with India insisting on Islamabad's action against terrorism before resuming any contacts.

During his speech, Sharif refrained from naming any specific country, but it was evident that he was referring to India. He firmly stated that war is not an option for either nation and emphasized the catastrophic consequences of a "nuclear flashpoint," leaving no survivors.

"We have nothing against anybody. We are prepared to talk to them, provided that the neighbour is serious enough to discuss critical matters on the table," Sharif stated, underscoring the importance of addressing serious issues through peaceful and meaningful conversations.

While he didn't mention specific issues, it is well-known that the strained relations between India and Pakistan revolve around contentious matters, including the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. However, despite these challenges, Sharif reaffirmed that Pakistan is a nuclear power not driven by aggression but for defense purposes.

Sharif further highlighted the disastrous implications of past wars, which generated poverty, unemployment, and a lack of resources to support education and healthcare for the people. He urged for a shift from a war-driven economic competition to prioritize peaceful negotiations.

However, despite Sharif's offer, there has been no immediate response from Indian officials.

Historically, there have been attempts at improving relations between the two countries. Former Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made several peace overtures during Nawaz Sharif's tenure as Pakistan's Premier between 2013 and 2017. However, ties between the two nations subsequently deteriorated.
