The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a stationary goods train near Chennai, injuring 19 passengers and derailing 12 coaches. The accident occurred due to a misrouting error that led the train onto a loop line. Rescue operations are ongoing, and train services in the region have been disrupted.
In a major railway accident near Chennai, the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express (Train No. 12578) collided with a stationary goods train at Kavaraippettai railway station on Friday evening, injuring 19 passengers and causing 12 coaches to derail. The collision occurred around 8:30 PM in the Chennai-Gudur section, disrupting train services in the region.
According to Southern Railways General Manager RN Singh, the train was not scheduled to stop at Kavaraippettai. The train's driver followed correct signals after departing Chennai, but instead of continuing on the main line, it mistakenly switched to a loop line, where it collided with a goods train parked on the loop. This error, currently under investigation, caused the accident. Officials reported that the train was traveling at 75 km/h when it struck the stationary freight train.
Efforts to restore the tracks are ongoing, and a special train was arranged early Saturday to transport stranded passengers to their destination. Affected travelers were provided with food and water, and a help desk has been set up at Chennai Central Railway Station.
