Prime Minister Modi praised The Sabarmati Report, a film depicting the 2002 Godhra train burning, for bringing out "the truth." Directed by Dheeraj Sarna, the film aligns with Modi’s earlier endorsements of movies like The Kashmir Files that revisit contested historical events.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the recently released film The Sabarmati Report, which revisits the 2002 Godhra train burning incident and its aftermath. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi remarked, “Well said. It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it. A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!”

The prime minister’s comments were in response to a video of the film’s trailer shared by a user. The movie, directed by Dheeraj Sarna and starring Vikrant Massey, Raashii Khanna, and Ridhi Dogra, was released on Friday. Produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, Amul V Mohan, and Anshul Mohan, the film aims to present a factual account of the burning of the Sabarmati Express’s S-6 coach on February 27, 2002. The tragic incident claimed the lives of 59 Hindu devotees returning from Ayodhya and ignited widespread communal riots in Gujarat.

The film has drawn parallels to PM Modi’s praise for earlier cinematic works that delve into historical controversies, such as The Kashmir Files in 2022 and The Kerala Story in 2023. In those instances, the prime minister highlighted the role of cinema in presenting historical truths and challenging narratives that have persisted over time.

PM Modi’s endorsement of The Sabarmati Report underscores the government’s recognition of films as tools for educating the public and promoting alternative perspectives on contentious historical events.
