In a significant diplomatic move, US President Joe Biden is set to embark on a visit to Israel this Wednesday, as announced by the country's Secretary of State, Antony Blinken. The purpose of this visit is twofold: to demonstrate unwavering US support for its closest Middle East ally and to play a vital role in preventing the escalating conflict from spreading throughout the region.

President Biden's visit comes at the invitation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and it is expected to center around discussions concerning US assistance in anticipation of potential ground operations in the Gaza Strip. Secretary Blinken has also indicated the potential deployment of 2,000 US troops to the Middle East, underlining the gravity of the crisis.

In an interview with CBS, President Biden expressed his concerns about the possibility of Israel re-occupying Gaza, stating that it would be a "big mistake." He emphasized the importance of eliminating the militant group Hamas while concurrently working towards a path to a Palestinian state, thus acknowledging the complex nature of the conflict.

The Gaza Strip has been enduring an Israeli aerial bombardment campaign for ten days, accompanied by a total siege that has cut off essential supplies, including water, food, and electricity, to its population of 2 million. This siege has drawn criticism from human rights organizations, which argue that it violates humanitarian law. The situation in Gaza deteriorated following a terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, which prompted the Israeli response.

Tragically, the ongoing conflict has already resulted in a substantial loss of life. The death toll currently stands at over 1,400 people in Israel and nearly 2,700 people in Gaza. The humanitarian situation in the region is dire, with urgent calls for a ceasefire from the international community.

Amidst these developments, there have been reports of a proposed humanitarian corridor to facilitate the safe passage of foreign nationals out of the Gaza Strip through Egypt's Rafah crossing. Approximately 600 American passport holders, along with an unconfirmed number of other foreign nationals, find themselves trapped in the blockaded enclave as it faces continuous and severe Israeli bombardment, as reported by NBC News.

President Biden's visit to Israel signifies a critical moment in international diplomacy, where the stakes are high, and the hope is for a peaceful resolution to the Gaza crisis while reinforcing US-Israel relations.
