President Droupadi Murmu Calls for Impartial Voting on National Voters' Day

President Droupadi Murmu, on National Voters' Day, urged voters to overcome biases and exercise their rights conscientiously. She praised the Election Commission for adopting inclusive practices and electoral reforms while highlighting India’s growing democratic participation, particularly by women. Awards were presented for exemplary electoral conduct, celebrating India's democratic ethos.
On the 15th National Voters' Day, President Droupadi Murmu urged Indian citizens to transcend prejudice, discrimination, and inducements when casting their votes. Addressing an event in the national capital, she highlighted the pivotal role of enlightened voters in fortifying democracy.
In her speech, President Murmu commended the Election Commission (EC) for embracing advanced technology and transparent practices to enhance electoral processes. She acknowledged the EC's efforts to make voting accessible to senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and tribal voters in remote areas.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, and other senior officials also attended the event. Meghwal noted the significance of recent reforms, such as the 33% reservation for women in legislatures and the proposal for simultaneous elections. He expressed optimism that these changes would strengthen governance and democratic integrity.
During the event, President Murmu presented the Best Electoral Practices Awards to outstanding electoral officers. She also received the first copy of the book "India Votes 2024: A Saga of Democracy."

National Voters' Day, observed annually since 2011, commemorates the establishment of the Election Commission on January 25, 1950. The President emphasised that Indian democracy continues to inspire the world and encouraged citizens to fulfil their electoral responsibilities conscientiously.
The increasing participation of women and the EC's commitment to inclusivity were highlighted as significant markers of India's democratic progress.
