In
a remarkable celebration of excellence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended
heartfelt congratulations to the distinguished recipients of the
Padma Awards 2024 on Republic Day. Across diverse sectors, 132 eminent
personalities, including M Venkaiah Naidu, Vyjayantimala Bali, and Young Liu,
were honored for their outstanding contributions.
Expressing
pride in India's talent pool, PM Modi underscored the significance of the Padma
Awards, recognizing the invaluable contributions of individuals like Sulabh International
founder late Bindeshwar Pathak and the first woman judge of the Supreme Court
late M Fathima Beevi.
Adding
to the illustrious list were luminaries like actor Mithun Chakraborty, BJP
veteran Ram Naik, and philanthropist Kiran Nadar. The Awards, presented on the
eve of the 75th Republic Day, symbolize the nation's gratitude towards those
who have left an indelible mark in their respective fields.
In a social media post on X, PM Modi conveyed his best wishes, stating, "Congratulations to all those who have been conferred the Padma Awards. India cherishes their contribution across diverse sectors. May they continue to inspire people with their exceptional work."
The
government had earlier announced the posthumous conferment of the Bharat Ratna,
the highest civilian award, on two-time Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur.
This added a poignant touch to the awards ceremony, recognizing Thakur's
exemplary leadership.
Padma
Awards, presented in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and
Padma Shri, cover a wide range of disciplines such as art, social work,
science, literature, sports, and more. The President of India confers these
awards at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhawan annually.
For
the year 2024, the list includes 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110
Padma Shri awardees. Notably, 30 awardees are women, and the list encompasses 8
individuals from the category of Foreigners, NRI, PIO, and OCI, along with 9
posthumous awardees, showcasing the diversity and richness of the honorees.
