Project Cheetah:-
On 18th of February 2023, India is all set to welcome home 12 Cheetahs from South Africa at the Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh under Project Cheetah. However, this would only be the first batch of 12 cheetahs from South Africa. Project Cheetah has a long way to go in drastically reviving the population of Cheetahs in India. About Project Cheetah In the year 1952, cheetahs were declared to be extinct in India. In 2009, a genuine attempt under Project Cheetah was made by the Indian government to reintroduce cheetahs into the Indian habitat but Iran did not cooperate with India. Further in 2020, South African experts visited four sites in India under Project Cheetah to check their viability as a habitat for cheetahs and since then, the partnership of India and South India began to revive the population of cheetahs in India. In 2022, 8 cheetahs were transported from Windhoek, Namibia, to Gwalior, India. Another transfer has been planned on 18th February under which 12 cheetahs from South Africa would be flown to India again under Project Cheetah. Project Cheetah The Way Ahead for Project Cheetah The first batch of 12 cheetahs from South Africa would arrive in the upcoming week. Further, it has been planned that India would welcome 12 cheetahs from South Africa every year for a period of 8- 10 years in a row under the MoU signed between India and South Africa. This MoU would be re- evaluated periodically every 5 years, in order to check the relevance of the policy of introducing 12 cheetahs from South Africa to India annually. Project Cheetah is sure to go a long way ahead in carnivore conservation and cooperation of countries in the conservation of biodiversity of the earth. Despite the fact that Project Cheetah has been estimated to cost the Indian government 90 crores annually besides other maintenance costs does not hinder India from making attempts to revive the Cheetah population. Companies like the Indian Oil Corporation have lent out a helping hand to the government to supply funds for Project Cheetah.
