Punjab Police on Monday apprehended a Congress leader for his alleged involvement in kidnapping and rioting.
The accused, identified as Sarvotam Singh, also known as Lucky Sandhu, is the state general secretary of Punjab Youth Congress.
His brother, Amaninder alias Maninder Sandhu, who serves as the Congress youth wing's district president for Ludhiana rural, has also been booked in the same case.
The charges against Sandhu stem from his alleged involvement in kidnapping a witness in an assault case and threatening him at gunpoint.
The complainant, Harjit Singh, a transporter from Tower Colony, claimed that Lucky Sandhu, his brother, and their associates kidnapped him, took him to their roadside eatery named "Bhraavan Da Dhaba" in Sahnewal, and physically assaulted him.
Singh further claimed that Lucky Sandhu threatened him with a gun and forced it against his neck if he testified against him in court.
However, Singh escaped the threatening situation on Saturday and immediately contacted the police.
The complainant additionally claimed that he was a witness to Lucky Sandhu's assault of his friend Gurvir Singh Garcha. The accused, he said, also stole his phone while committing the assault.
Ludhiana police have registered an FIR against Lucky Sandhu, Amaninder Sandhu, and their 10-12 unidentified associates under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to assault, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, and rioting. Later, Sandhu was arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend his brother and identify their aides.
In April of this year, Lucky Sandhu was arrested in connection with an extortion case involving the use of phone calls to lure wealthy businessmen in Ludhiana. His release on bail in June, however, was met with cheers from Congress backers.
Both Lucky Sandhu and his brother were elected as office-bearers in the Punjab Youth Congress following elections held in July.
