R Madhavan has been appointed as both the President of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the Chairman of its governing council. Madhavan, whose film "Rocketry: The Nambi Effect" recently secured the National Award for Best Feature Film, expressed his delight while on a flight, stating, "I just heard the news (with two folded hands emoticons)." The announcement came from Union Minister Anurag Thakur on social media.
In a message, he conveyed his warm congratulations, stating, "I extend my heartiest congratulations to @ActorMadhavan ji for his nomination as the President of @FTIIOfficial and Chairman of the governing council. With your extensive experience and unwavering ethics, I'm confident that you will enhance this institute, usher in positive transformations, and elevate it to new heights. My best wishes go out to you."
FTII's previous presidents include filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and actor Anupam Kher, the latter serving for a year. R Madhavan, aged 53, is a versatile talent known for his roles as an actor, writer, director, and producer. Notably, in 1988, he was awarded a scholarship from Rajaram College and also represented India as a Cultural Ambassador in Stettler, Alberta, Canada.
Madhavan's journey to stardom in Tamil cinema was marked by his breakthrough role in Mani Ratnam's "Alai Payuthey" in 2000. His remarkable talent has earned him four Filmfare Awards South and three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. While he has contributed to several Bollywood films, it's his memorable debut in "Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein," where he played the lead alongside Dia Mirza, that remains a defining moment in his career.
