The Issue

The grandson of Late VD Savarkar, Ranjit Savarkar, is very upset with the comment Rahul Gandhi has made in a press conference, that was called after he was disqualified from Lok Sabha based upon his conviction by Surat court. He remarked, “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi, and Gandhi does not offer an apology to anyone". In response to this remark by RaGa, Ranjit who called such comments childish, said, "Rahul Gandhi is saying he won't apologise as he isn't Savarkar. I challenge him to show documents that prove Savarkar apologised". He added that using the names of patriots to promote politics is wrong and deplorable against which action must be taken.

Reactions to The Comment

This comment has not just triggered the opposition but also provoked the Shiv Sena(UBT), who is an ally of the  Congress in Maharashtra, to react. While addressing a rally, Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray, who considers Savarkar as his”idol”, said, “Savarkar is our idol, and his insult will not be tolerated if we have to fight together to protect our democracy. Savarkar suffered unimaginable torture in the Andaman cellular jail for 14 years. We can only read the sufferings. It is a form of sacrifice". "I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that we have come together to save our country's democracy and its Constitution. But you are deliberately being provoked. If we allow this time to get wasted, then democracy will cease to exist. 2024 will be the last election." he added.

Sharad Pawar Steps in

Amidst this heated exchange of words, member of Rajya Sabha, Sharad Pawar has stepped in to act as the pacifist and has conveyed Shiv Sena’s displeasure to the top leadership of Congress. In response to their concerns, Congress has agreed to restrain their sharp criticism of Savarkar.
