Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, a senior BJP MLA, submitted his
nomination for the state assembly speaker's position on December 17. This move
was supported by leaders from both ruling and opposition parties, indicating a
bipartisan consensus. His nomination came after he resigned as the National
Vice President of the BJP, marking a significant transition in his political
role.
The
pro-tem speaker, Ramvichar Netam, was previously sworn in by the governor,
paving the way for the impending first session of the sixth Chhattisgarh
assembly, scheduled to commence on December 19. This session holds immense
significance for the state's political landscape.
Raman
Singh, a seasoned 71-year-old MLA representing the Rajnandgaon seat, formally
filed his nomination at the assembly building. Notably present were Chief
Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Deputy CMs Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma, along with key
figures like Congress legislature party leader Charan Das Mahant and former CM

Baghel,
in a statement to the press, affirmed Singh's expected uncontested election as
the speaker of the state assembly. He also extended congratulations to Mahant,
who secured the Congress legislature party leader role.
This
political shift follows the BJP's remarkable comeback in the state, winning 54
seats out of the total 90 in the recent elections. The Congress, which
previously held 68 seats, experienced a significant reduction to 35 seats,
while the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) secured one seat.
Raman
Singh's consistent electoral victories, spanning seven terms, highlight his
strong political standing, particularly in the Rajnandgaon constituency, where
he won consecutively in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.
