Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told The New York Times that Moscow is not interested in a peace deal with Kiev at the present time. He said Russia will keep working in Ukraine for the foreseeable future because there are "currently no grounds" for a deal.
This confession comes as some U.S. legislators have suggested the U.S. may mediate a deal by withholding weapons and pressing Ukraine to make territorial concessions in exchange for peace. However, Russia has blamed Western nations, namely the United States, for sabotaging peace talks.
The diplomatic session in Saudi Arabia where the conflict in Ukraine was discussed was followed by the rejection of a peace proposal. Russia was conspicuously absent from the summit. Ukraine proposed a 10-point peace plan during the discussion, with the first item being that the Russian military be completely withdrawn from Ukrainian land.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied Ukraine's independence and declared the unlawful annexation of several districts in eastern Ukraine, therefore such requests have been roundly rejected in Russia.
Even though Peskov said Russia has no plans to seize the entire country, Russian officials have said they are against a free Ukraine joining the Western alliance. According to their constitution, they want full sovereignty over all of the land they now occupy.
Russia is not interested in negotiating a peace treaty with Ukraine at this time, thus the situation remains hostile. Some opponents of US military aid to Kyiv have called for a swift conclusion, but Russia's current position signals negotiations could be difficult. The international community remains concerned that the conflict could escalate further, so they keep focusing their attention on it.
