Russia seizes Avdiivka as Ukraine pulls troops from frontline city

In a significant development, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu declared the complete capture of Avdiivka by Russian forces, following Ukraine's decision to withdraw troops from the frontline city. This strategic move underscores Russia's escalating military presence in the region, as tensions between Moscow and Kyiv continue to mount. Shoigu reported that Russian troops are now engaged in clearing the remaining pockets of resistance, particularly at the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant, further solidifying their control over the area.

The timing of this victory is crucial for Russia, as it seeks to bolster morale ahead of the upcoming second anniversary of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Additionally, with presidential elections looming in March, this conquest serves as a strategic triumph for the Kremlin. Ukrainian Commander Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi confirmed the troop withdrawal in a statement on Facebook, citing the need to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives of servicemen. He emphasized the relocation of troops to more advantageous positions, indicating a shift in defensive strategies.

Despite the withdrawal, Ukrainian forces have been commended for their valiant efforts in combatting Russian aggression. Syrskyi praised the soldiers for their dignity and resilience in confronting Russian military units, inflicting significant losses on the enemy. However, concerns persist regarding the deteriorating situation faced by Ukrainian troops in Avdiivka. Deputy Commander Rodion Kudriashov highlighted the relentless onslaught of Russian forces, with reports indicating imminent critical conditions.

The United States, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, expressed alarm over the situation, with White House spokesperson John Kirby warning of the potential fall of Avdiivka to Russia. Kirby attributed the dire circumstances to Ukrainian forces' dwindling artillery ammunition, exacerbating the vulnerability of their defenses. Despite ongoing political disputes hindering aid, the United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

As the conflict intensifies, the international community closely monitors developments in Eastern Europe, with Avdiivka emerging as a focal point in the ongoing standoff between Russia and Ukraine.
