The Sports Authority of India (SAI) shared an update on the three Wushu players who were barred from entering China for the 2023 Asian Games, which commenced on Saturday.


The three female athletes representing Arunachal Pradesh, Nyeman Wangsu, Onilu Tega, and Mepung Lamgu, had initially been scheduled to participate in individual events.


These events took place between September 24 and 28 at the Guali Cultural and Sports Centre in Xiaoshan district during the 2023 Asian Games.


To convey their support for the athletes, SAI took to X, previously known as Twitter to express, “We stand with the three #AsianGames2022 bound Wushu athletes, taking the utmost care for them at this hour.”They further revealed, “The 3 athletes are being taken care of at the SAI Hostel.”

SAI also shared an image depicting the three Wushu players sharing a meal with a representative from SAI at the SAI hostel situated in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the national capital.


On Friday, an unfortunate situation unfolded as two Wushu athletes hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, Onilu and Mepung, encountered difficulties.


Even though they had received official approval from the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 Organizing Committee to participate, they were unable to download their accreditation cards.These cards serve as their essential entry visas to China for the event.


Although the third athlete, Nyeman, managed to obtain her accreditation, she was subsequently informed that she would not be permitted to proceed with her journey beyond Hong Kong.


These athletes were initially scheduled to participate in individual events within the field of martial arts sports.


Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also voiced his strong condemnation of China's refusal to grant visas to the three athletes from Arunachal Pradesh.


He asserted that such an act not only goes against the principles of sportsmanship but also violates the regulations governing the Asian Games' proceedings.

He shared on X, "I strongly condemn this act by China to deny visas to our Wushu

Athletes from Arunachal Pradesh who were to participate in the 19th Asian Games in

Hangzhou."

The minister further added, "This violates both the spirit of Sports & also the Rules governing the conduct of Asian Games, which explicitly prohibits discrimination against competitors from member states."
