Saudi Arabia has recently carried out its largest group execution of the year, putting five individuals to death for their involvement in a deadly attack on a house of worship, according to state media reports.

The group of executed individuals consisted of four Saudis and one Egyptian national who were found guilty of orchestrating an attack that resulted in the deaths of five people, with numerous others sustaining injuries.

Saudi Arabia has recently carried out its largest group execution of the year, putting five individuals to death.

The official statement from the interior ministry, published by the Saudi Press Agency, did not disclose the specific date of the attack or the type of worship place that was targeted.

The method of execution employed in this case was not detailed in the report, although, it is known that Saudi Arabia has utilized beheading as a form of capital punishment in the past. This recent execution brings the total number of individuals put to death by Saudi Arabia to 68 so far this year.

Notably, more than 20 executions have taken place since early May, all of which were related to terrorism offenses, as stated in various reports.

In a separate incident in late May, two Bahraini nationals were executed by Saudi authorities after being convicted of terrorism-related charges. Amnesty International expressed concerns regarding this particular case, citing the reliance on "torture-tainted confessions."

Last year, Saudi Arabia executed a total of 147 individuals, which was more than double the figure reported in 2021, where 69 executions were carried out. Notably, in March 2022 alone, 81 people were executed in a single day for offenses related to terrorism.

The recent surge in executions in Saudi Arabia contrasts with the country's efforts to cultivate a more favorable international image through comprehensive social and economic reforms introduced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who effectively rules Saudi Arabia as the de facto leader. The Crown Prince had previously stated that the death penalty had been significantly restricted, remaining applicable only in cases of murder or when there is a threat to the lives of many people.
