Virender Sehwag, the former Indian opener, stressed the importance of prioritizing national duty over T20 franchise commitments. In a discussion, he highlighted examples of players leaving leagues for international duty and warned against player burnout leading to the T20 World Cup.
In
discussions surrounding the proliferation of T20
leagues worldwide, Virender Sehwag, renowned for his outspoken views,
emphasized the significance of prioritizing national duty over commitments to
franchise cricket. Speaking to PTI Bhasha, Sehwag urged players to maintain a balance,
giving precedence to representing their countries.
"Representing
a country should always take precedence over participating in any league,"
Sehwag asserted, underlining the paramount importance of national allegiance in
the face of lucrative franchise opportunities. He cited instances from the
recently concluded ILT20, where West Indies players opted to prioritize
international duties over league engagements, as exemplary displays of
commitment to the country.
While acknowledging the allure of T20 leagues, Sehwag stressed the need for players, particularly domestic talents, to focus primarily on excelling in domestic competitions with the ultimate aspiration of donning their national colors on the international stage. With the impending ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 on the horizon, Sehwag addressed concerns regarding player burnout arising from their participation in tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024).

Contrary
to apprehensions, Sehwag expressed confidence that tournaments like the IPL
would serve as ideal preparation platforms for the global event, providing
players with ample opportunities to maintain form, and fitness, and fine-tune
their skills. He emphasized the rigorous yet beneficial nature of the IPL,
where players engage in 14 matches over two months, facilitating optimal
preparation for the T20 World Cup.
Transitioning
to the realm of emerging talent, Sehwag weighed in on Yashasvi Jaiswal's
burgeoning career in international cricket. Acknowledging Jaiswal's stellar
performances in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, Sehwag cautioned
against premature comparisons with cricketing greats, underscoring the need for
patience and sustained excellence to truly merit such accolades.
