Shah Cheragh Shrine Iran

According to officials in Fars province, a Shia shrine in Shiraz city of Iran was targeted in an attack, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to seven others, as reported by the Iranian News Agency Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

According to Al Jazeera, the sacred shia shrine has been subjected to a second fatal attack in less than a year, as another gunman forcibly entered the shrine's premises and opened fire. Yadollah Bouali, the regional leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), informed state media that on Sunday at 7pm (15:30 GMT), a lone attacker entered the Shah Cheragh shrine through its southern entrance to carry out what he referred to as a "terrorist" operation. This dismisses initial reports of two attackers.

The apprehended assailant, armed with an assault rifle and eight magazines containing a total of 240 bullets, managed to fire 11 shots before being subdued, leaving four individuals shot, out of which one was dead

Fars Deputy Governor Esmail Ghezel Sofla referred to the attacker as a Takfiri element, stating that the person has been apprehended and is under judicial interrogation, as per IRNA. In a previous incident on 26th October, 2022, 13 individuals lost their lives during a terrorist attack on Shah Cheragh. Back then, a gunman with an automatic rifle targeted pilgrims and staff, leading to 13 deaths and 40 injuries before being killed by security forces, as reported by Al Jazeera. The attack had been claimed by ISIL (ISIS).

The said organization was also accountable for synchronized assaults in 2017 on the Iranian parliament and the tomb of the former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran.
