Sonia Gandhi has criticised PM Modi for his silence on Gaza, calling Israel’s actions a “genocide” and urging India to uphold its constitutional and moral legacy. In a sharply worded article, she demanded a bold stance from the government in support of Palestinian civilians amid rising global condemnation of Israeli military actions.

Congress parliamentary party leader Sonia Gandhi has strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued silence on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In an article published in a leading Hindi daily, Gandhi called the Israeli military campaign a “barbaric genocide” and described the Indian government's inaction as a “cowardly betrayal” of the nation’s constitutional values.
Referring to India’s historic support for Palestine, including early recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organisation in 1974 and the Palestinian state in 1988, Gandhi reminded readers that India has long stood for justice on the global stage. She argued that India must take a “clear and bold” stance on behalf of Gaza’s civilians.
While acknowledging the October 2023 attacks by Hamas as unjustifiable, Gandhi condemned the Israeli response as disproportionate and criminal, citing over 55,000 Palestinian civilian deaths and widespread destruction in Gaza. She accused the Israeli Defence Forces of using starvation as a weapon by cutting off medical and food supplies, calling it a “crime against humanity”.
Gandhi further highlighted what she views as global failures, noting that United Nations resolutions and the International Court of Justice's warnings have gone unheeded. She pointed to actions taken by countries like South Africa, Brazil, France, the UK, and Canada to hold Israel accountable, arguing that India must also speak out.

She warned that India’s silence undermines its global moral standing and urged the government to return to its legacy of championing international law, justice, and peace. Her remarks come amid growing global condemnation of Israel’s military strategy and a shift in diplomatic responses from several countries.
