Fake Social Media Post Misquoting Chief Justice of India

The Supreme Court (SC) has strongly denounced a viral social media post that falsely attributed a quote to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Chandrachud, terming it "fake and mischievous."

The fake post featured a picture of the CJI along with a fabricated quote encouraging citizens to protest against the ruling government, accompanied by the caption "Indian democracy Supreme Court Zindabad."

Fake and Mischievous Social Media Post Misquoting Chief Justice of India denounced by Supreme Court

In the fabricated quote, the CJI was falsely cited as saying, "We are trying our best to save the Constitution of India, the democracy of India. But your cooperation is also very important for this, all the people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government for their rights, this dictatorial government will scare people, and threaten, but you don't have to be afraid, keep courage and ask the government to account, I am with you."

In light of this, the Supreme Court's PRO released a statement to set the record straight. "The Supreme Court of India has been made aware of a social media post (inviting the public to protest against authorities) using a file photograph and falsely quoting the Chief Justice of India," the statement read.

The statement elaborated on the gravity of the situation by calling the post "fake, ill-intended, and mischievous."

Supreme Court's quick response for spreading false information
The Supreme Court's quick and clear response shows how dangerous it is to spread false information.

The spokesperson for the Chief Justice of India stated unequivocally that the CJI had not made any such comment and had not given permission for any such post to be made. The dissemination of misinformation is being addressed, and it was confirmed that the proper steps are being done in coordination with law enforcement.

The Supreme Court's prompt and unequivocal response highlights the dangers of spreading misinformation, particularly when it involves public figures and institutions. The incident underscores the need for caution and fact-checking in the era of rampant digital communication to ensure the dissemination of accurate and reliable information.
