In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has reinstated the alleged criminal charges against Latha, the wife of renowned actor Rajinikanth, related to the Tamil film 'Kochadaiiyaan.' This decision was made by a bench comprising Justice AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh. Their ruling comes after hearing petitions that contested the judgment of the Karnataka High Court. In its announcement, the Supreme Court stated, "SLP(Crl) No. 9818/2022 and SLP(Crl.) No. 8327/2022 are disposed of by restoring the final report filed." However, the petitioner(s) in SLP(Crl.) No.8327/2022 are free to bring an appropriate application for discharge if so instructed."

The court stated that if the petitioner(s) submits such an application, the findings of the assailed order would not hinder the proceedings, and the Trial Court will be ordered accordingly. Moreover, the court said, "Taking into consideration the further submissions made, the physical presence of the petitioner-accused shall stand dispensed with until and unless the same is required by the Trial Court."

The Supreme Court emphasized that it had not expressed any opinions on the case's merits and encouraged the involved parties to seek resolution, possibly through mediation. Both sides have contested the High Court of Karnataka's decision, dated August 2, 2022. The court concluded that, based on a prior order passed by the Supreme Court on July 10, 2018, the only options for the petitioners are to file for discharge or face the trial.

Chennai-based Ad Bureau Advertising Pvt Ltd, dissatisfied with the Karnataka High Court's decision to dismiss the cheating case against Latha but maintain the forgery charges, has challenged this ruling in the Supreme Court. The High Court's ruling on August 2, 2022, provided partial relief for Latha by quashing the cheating charges but retaining the forgery allegations. In response, she sought redress in the Supreme Court.
