The Supreme Court issued notice to Lok Sabha's Secretary General on Mahua Moitra's expulsion challenge. She contests her removal over a cash-for-query case. The Court seeks a response within two weeks, scheduling a hearing in March. Moitra's alleged sharing of login credentials for unethical gains sparked her expulsion.
In
a significant development today, the Supreme Court directed the Secretary
General of the Lok Sabha to furnish a response within a fortnight regarding
the expulsion of Trinamool Congress Party leader Mahua Moitra. The expulsion,
stemming from a cash-for-query controversy, faces a challenge following
Moitra's plea to the apex court.
Moitra's
challenge emerged subsequent to the Lok Sabha's endorsement of the ethics
committee's report, indicting her for purportedly receiving illicit
gratifications and gifts from a business figure. The Court, composed of
Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti, conveyed to Moitra's representative the
need to review case records upon the court's reopening after the winter recess.
The
episode transpired during a heated Lok Sabha session where Parliamentary
Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to expel Moitra, alleging
unethical conduct. This motion was embraced through a voice vote, withholding
Moitra's opportunity to address the House.
The
ethics committee's assessment outlined Moitra's actions as unethical and
contemptuous, highlighting her sharing of Lok Sabha portal credentials with
unauthorized persons, posing a potential threat to national security, as
articulated by Minister Joshi.
The motion denouncing Moitra's conduct underscored her acceptance of gifts and gratification, deeming it unacceptable for an MP. It urged an intensive governmental inquiry into her alleged malpractice.

This
contention stems from a complaint filed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, supported by
Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai. The complaint alleged Moitra's
exchange of questions for remunerations from businessman Darshan Hiranandani,
supposedly to assail Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Hiranandani,
in an affidavit to the ethics committee, claimed Moitra provided her login
credentials for the Lok Sabha members' website. This allegation triggered a
preliminary FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, escalating the
gravity of the situation.
The
imbroglio showcases a clash between political ethics and accountability,
prompting a legal tussle that will unfold in the coming months.
