The Supreme Court of India is slated to hear a petition on Monday that seeks to provide free sanitary pads to girls in classes 6 to 12. Additionally, the plea urges the government to ensure the availability of separate and suitable female toilet facilities in all government-aided and residential schools.
The petitioner behind this plea is Jaya Thakur, a social worker. The case will be heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
Previously, the Supreme Court had instructed the Central government to develop a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and a national model to be adopted by all states and Union Territories. The aim of this initiative is to address menstrual hygiene management for young girls in schools.
The lack of access to affordable and hygienic sanitary pads has been a pressing issue for female students, often leading to absenteeism during menstruation, affecting their academic performance and overall well-being. By advocating for free sanitary pads and improved facilities, the plea strives to empower schoolgirls and ensure unimpeded access to education.
The upcoming Supreme Court hearing holds the promise of bringing about significant positive changes in the lives of millions of young girls, fostering a healthier and more inclusive educational environment.
