Through the
U.S.-Mexico border, thousands of migrants have recently made their way into the
United States, sparking fresh concerns for the Biden administration,
particularly as election season approaches. The surge in arrivals has been
notable in areas like San Diego, California, as well as the Texan cities of El
Paso and Eagle Pass.
This influx comes
after months of declining border crossings and could pose political challenges
for President Joe Biden.
Back in May,
President Biden introduced stricter measures to deter illegal crossings,
including deportations and a five-year re-entry ban.
Initially, these
measures led to a remarkable 70% drop in border crossings. However, the recent
increase in arrivals, combined with a growing number of people traveling from
Central and South America, often riding perilous cargo trains through Mexico,
suggests that the initial deterrent effect may be fading.
Experts point out
that the U.S. lacks the resources and capacity to effectively detain and
process migrants at the border, making it difficult to enforce the harsh
penalties announced in May. Consequently, some asylum seekers who cross
illegally are being released into the U.S. with future court dates instead of
being deported, which serves as an encouraging example for migrants still en
route.
Andrew Selee,
head of the Migration Policy Institute, commented on the situation, stating
that while the administration had a smart strategy, they face limitations in
implementing it due to resource constraints.
In response to
questions, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) assured that they are
processing migrants efficiently and will impose consequences, including
deportation, on those without a legal basis to stay in the country.
Mexican President
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador acknowledged the need for an international plan to
address poverty in source countries and praised President Biden for creating
legal pathways for migrants, urging their expansion.
The situation
also extends beyond the Americas, with an increasing number of migrants
arriving from other continents. Violence, economic hardships, and the impacts
of climate change are contributing to mass displacement. African migrant
numbers registered by Mexican authorities this year have already tripled those
of 2022.
