Taslima Nasrin accused the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of censoring her play 'Lajja' at two theatre festivals, citing communal concerns. BJP leaders condemned the move, backing Nasrin and criticizing Banerjee for stifling free expression. The police's role in the cancellations remains unclear.
Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin has accused the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of suppressing artistic freedom by cancelling the play 'Lajja,' adapted from her novel. Nasrin claimed that police intervened to remove the play from two theatre festivals, citing concerns over communal unrest.
The cancellations occurred at the Gobardanga Natyoutsav in North 24 Parganas and the Pandua Natyoutsav in Hooghly. Nasrin criticized the move, highlighting that 'Lajja' had previously been staged successfully in Delhi without incident.
"I was exiled from West Bengal for fear of riots, yet fundamentalists remain unchecked while writers are silenced," Nasrin wrote on Facebook, condemning the state's actions.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has rallied behind Nasrin, with Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar accusing Mamata Banerjee of double standards and appeasement politics. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya questioned Banerjee’s leadership, suggesting she step down if she cannot ensure law and order.
