Texas Lawmakers Approve GOP-Favored Congressional Map, Send to Governor

Texas lawmakers approved a new congressional map favoring Republicans, adding five GOP-leaning districts ahead of the 2026 midterms. Democrats attempted to block it through walkouts and filibuster threats, alleging voter dilution. The map now goes to Governor Abbott, who is expected to sign it, though legal challenges are anticipated.

The Texas Senate has given final approval to a redrawn congressional map that strengthens Republican prospects ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The plan, pushed by President Donald Trump and crafted by the state’s GOP majority, now heads to Governor Greg Abbott, who is expected to sign it into law quickly.

The new map creates five additional Republican-leaning districts, a move Democrats argue unfairly dilutes minority voting power in violation of the Voting Rights Act. Democratic lawmakers attempted to block or delay passage, staging a two-week walkout earlier this month and preparing for a last-minute filibuster led by Senate Democratic caucus leader Carol Alvarado. However, the effort faltered after procedural maneuvers allowed Republicans to advance the measure.

Senator Phil King, the Republican sponsor of the bill, defended the map, stating that his goal was both to ensure legality and strengthen Republican candidates in Texas. He warned that without the new districts, the GOP risked losing its slim majority in the US House of Representatives.

The bitter partisan fight in Texas reflects a larger nationwide struggle over redistricting. Across the country, both Republican and Democratic-led states are moving aggressively to redraw congressional boundaries before the next elections. Legal challenges are expected, with Democrats vowing to take the matter to court in hopes of overturning the new Texas map.

For now, the approval marks a major victory for Trump-aligned Republicans, underscoring Texas’ central role in shaping the balance of power in Washington.
