Tharoor's Silence Sparks Buzz Ahead of Operation Sindoor Debate

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s enigmatic “Maunvrat” remark has stirred speculation about his role in the upcoming Operation Sindoor debate in Parliament. Amid internal party tensions and rising Opposition demands for Prime Minister Modi’s presence, Tharoor’s silence has become a focal point in the monsoon session’s charged political atmosphere.

As the Monsoon Session of Parliament braced for a heated debate on Operation Sindoor and the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s cryptic reply outside Parliament on Monday stirred speculation. When asked about his participation, Tharoor simply said, “Maunvrat, Maunvrat,” repeating the word for silence, without elaborating further.

The remark comes at a politically sensitive moment, as Tharoor’s public stance on national security has at times appeared to deviate from the party line. His recent diplomatic engagements abroad have also positioned him uniquely within the Congress, making his potential presence in the debate a point of interest.

The Congress has not confirmed its list of speakers for the discussion, leaving Tharoor’s role unclear. His apparent endorsement of the government's swift action in Kashmir has allegedly sparked tension within party ranks.

Meanwhile, the Congress has been vocal in demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's presence during the debate. Party spokesperson Jairam Ramesh criticised the Prime Minister’s foreign travel schedule and accused him of neglecting urgent domestic issues. Ramesh's pointed remarks referenced Modi’s upcoming foreign visit, highlighting ongoing unrest in Manipur and accusing the PM of prioritising appearances over accountability.

Monday’s session opened to immediate disruptions, continuing a pattern seen since the beginning of the monsoon term. Despite the chaos, national security remains a central theme, with the Opposition pushing for detailed scrutiny of the government’s handling of Operation Sindoor.

As pressure builds, all eyes remain on whether Tharoor will break his “maunvrat” and address the House or continue his cryptic silence amid political fault lines in his party.
