On July 1, 2023, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad arrested a 38 year old man called Saddam Sheikh on charges of attempting to spread terrorism through online platforms and links with al-Qaeda.


Saddam Was Born a Hindu

Saddam Sheikh earlier identified himself as Ranjeet Singh. He was a Hindu resident of the Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh. He fled from his home on a day when his father had beaten him up for stealing articles. Around 20 years ago, at the age of 15 years, during his stay at Mumbai, Ranjeet embraced Islam and changed his name to Saddam Sheikh. How Did Saddam Get Radicalised?

“Around three years ago, he started getting radicalized after being inspired by al-Qaeda and Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind modules and used to watch videos of terror attacks involving trucks,” said the senior police official investigating the matter.

What Was Saddam’s Plan?

On 14th July 2016, a cargo truck of France went out of control and drove into a crowd. The accident left 86 dead and 434 people injured. Saddam Sheikh worked as a lorry driver and was planning a similar attack on his countrymen.
