Apple CEO Tim Cook embarked on an unannounced visit to
China to address challenges stemming from sluggish iPhone 15 sales. Cook's
visit aimed to boost morale in Apple's most significant overseas market.
During his visit, Cook enthusiastically joined gamers at
an Apple store event in Chengdu, located in Southwestern China. The event
featured the popular game "Honor of Kings," developed by TiMi Studio,
a subsidiary of tech giant Tencent.
Cook thanked the Chengdu audience, stressing the game's roots and global popularity on the App Store, saying, "The action-packed Honor of Kings started here in Chengdu and is now a global phenomenon on the App Store."
The surprise visit came on the heels of disappointing
sales figures for the newly launched iPhone 15. Additionally, Apple has lost
its top position in the Chinese smartphone market, a position now held by
Huawei, according to a recent Jefferies report.
A research note further revealed a 4.5% decline in iPhone 15 sales during the first 17 days after its launch compared to the iPhone 14. This decline was attributed to various factors, including poor consumer sentiment and the iPhone 15's underwhelming performance relative to its predecessor.

Ethan Qi, associate director at Counterpoint Research,
noted, "All of these things are working together to take some of the shine
away from Apple's luster during the first few weeks of iPhone 15 sales."
The Chinese tech landscape has become increasingly competitive,
with Huawei launching high-end smartphones featuring advanced semiconductors
and 5G connectivity despite ongoing U.S. sanctions. These sanctions had
previously hindered Huawei's progress, but the company has now regained
momentum.
Huawei, once Apple's primary challenger in China, has
rebounded to claim the number one spot despite earlier setbacks caused by U.S.
technology restrictions.
Apple's shares experienced a nearly 1% drop in the stock
market in response to these challenges. Cook's surprise visit to China reflects
the company's commitment to addressing these issues and revitalizing its
presence in the crucial Chinese market.
