In Tirunelveli District, heavy rainfall prompted authorities to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges on December 20th. The incessant rain led to the postponement of scheduled exams as confirmed by the district collector. Students and parents are advised to stay updated through direct communication with their respective schools.

Social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, relayed the announcement: "Tamil Nadu | A holiday has been announced in all schools and colleges of Tirunelveli district tomorrow (20th December). The exams that were to be held are also postponed: District Collector, Tirunelveli." The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several districts, including Tenskasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunvaneli, and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu due to the intense rainfall.

According to IMD reports, Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy to extremely heavy rainfall from December 18th, 0830 IST, to December 19th, 0830 IST. The Chennai Meteorological Department forecasted moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall across multiple districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal on December 19th at 7 am. The rainfall's impact in Tamil Nadu resulted in three fatalities and stranded approximately 500 rail passengers due to flooded stations. Responding to the alarming situation, all educational institutions decided to remain closed on Monday to ensure safety.

In a bid to manage the crisis, Chief Minister M K Stalin urged Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to expedite helicopter deployments for rescue and relief efforts in the state's southern districts. In a letter dated December 19th, Stalin highlighted the unprecedented rainfall in the region, affecting around 40 lakh people in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts severely. Particularly, areas like Srivaikuntam and Tuticorin faced significant flooding in the Thamirabarani River and its surroundings.
