A deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning left two children dead and 17 others injured. The incident occurred during a morning Mass, just days into the new school year, as terrified students and churchgoers tried to flee the gunfire.

Witnesses initially mistook the sounds for construction or fireworks before realizing it was gunshots. Ten-year-old Weston Halsne, who narrowly escaped injury, said his friend was shot while trying to protect him. Another student, Clarissa Garcia, described the chaos, saying she was scared and confused when the shots began.

The shooter, identified as 23-year-old Robin Westman, fired dozens of rounds using legally purchased firearms. Police say the attack was planned, with two church doors barricaded from the outside. Westman died by suicide at the scene.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara condemned the shooting, calling it a deliberate act of violence against innocent children. Mayor Jacob Frey addressed the shooter’s past gender transition and warned against using the tragedy to target transgender individuals.
