Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska to discuss a Ukraine ceasefire and a potential nuclear deal. This first face-to-face meeting since Trump’s return comes amid concerns from allies, with both leaders signalling readiness for agreements influenced by war pressures and expiring arms treaties.
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska on Friday for their first in-person talks since Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency. The meeting, set for 11 a.m. local time at a Cold War-era air force base in Anchorage, is aimed at brokering a ceasefire in Ukraine while also exploring a potential new nuclear arms agreement.
The White House confirmed Trump’s schedule, with his departure from Washington early Friday morning and a same-day return after the talks. The summit comes amid growing concern in Kyiv and European capitals that Trump’s approach could weaken Ukraine’s position in the war, which has stretched beyond three years.
Trump, who previously promised to end the conflict within 24 hours, admitted on Thursday that achieving peace had proved more complex than expected. Nevertheless, he assured allies in a recent conference call that Ukraine must be part of any land-related negotiations and agreed in principle to the idea of security guarantees in a post-war settlement.
Putin, under mounting economic pressure from Western sanctions, has suggested that discussions could also include a replacement for the last remaining U.S.-Russia nuclear arms control treaty, which is due to expire in February. A Kremlin insider told Reuters that some form of agreement may be reached during the Alaska meeting due to both leaders’ mutual incentives.

Trump has also hinted at the possibility of arranging a follow-up summit involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, though Kyiv has not been invited to the current meeting. The outcome of Friday’s talks could play a pivotal role in shaping both the future of the Ukraine war and the trajectory of U.S.-Russia relations.
