External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India’s Russian oil imports were never discussed with Washington before Trump imposed heavy tariffs. He criticized Trump’s public style of diplomacy, defended India’s trade “red lines,” and argued that India is being unfairly singled out compared to major energy importers like China and the EU.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has said that India’s purchase of Russian oil was never discussed with Washington before US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on New Delhi. His remarks came after Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on India, with an additional 25 percent linked to energy imports from Russia.
Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum 2025, Jaishankar pointed out that Trump has taken an unusual approach to both foreign and domestic policies by conducting them largely in the public domain. He remarked that no other US president has engaged in such open and unconventional diplomacy.
The minister highlighted that the Trump administration often makes public statements before formally communicating with the countries involved. According to him, this style has created new challenges for global diplomacy, with India being one of several nations affected.
Addressing Trump’s use of tariffs, Jaishankar noted that applying them for both trade and non-trade matters represents a novel shift in American policy. He stressed that India will continue to safeguard its “red lines,” particularly in defending the interests of its farmers, small producers, and overall national interest.

On the oil issue, Jaishankar argued that India has been unfairly targeted, pointing out that similar standards have not been applied to larger importers such as China or the European Union. He emphasized that India’s energy decisions are made with its economic security in mind.
The EAM concluded that while Trump’s policies may be disruptive, India remains committed to balancing its global partnerships while protecting its sovereign choices.
