Trump Warns Canada Over Palestine Recognition, Calls Trade Deal ‘Hard’

Donald Trump criticised Canada’s UN move to recognise Palestine, warning it would make a US-Canada trade deal “very hard.” The statement signals diplomatic strain and reflects Trump’s continued opposition to Palestine’s statehood without direct talks. Canada has yet to respond, but analysts expect rising tension in bilateral relations.

Former US President Donald Trump issued a strong reaction to Canada’s recent move at the United Nations to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. In a statement on Wednesday, Trump criticised the decision and warned that it could severely impact ongoing trade discussions between the two countries.

“It’s going to be very hard for us to make a trade deal with Canada after this,” Trump stated, referring to the Canadian government's official support for Palestine’s statehood. The comment marks a rare public rebuke of America’s close ally and signals a potential shift in the tone of bilateral relations should Trump return to office.

Trump has long taken a hardline stance on foreign policy regarding Israel and Palestine. His latest remarks indicate continued opposition to international recognition of Palestine without direct negotiation outcomes with Israel. Canada’s move at the UN is symbolic but diplomatically significant, and Trump’s immediate response suggests a willingness to let political disagreements spill over into economic policy.

While Canadian officials have not issued a direct response to the warning, analysts believe the remark could strain relations in the near term, especially as both nations explore new terms for trade cooperation. Trump’s rhetoric also aligns with his broader campaign strategy of asserting pressure on allies to follow US foreign policy priorities.

This development comes amid a flurry of foreign policy statements from Trump, who has been vocal in recent days about issues involving India, Russia, and now Canada. As global tensions rise, Trump’s sharp criticism of Canadian diplomacy could become a flashpoint in North American trade discussions.
