In the midst of an economic crisis, Pakistan has been hit with yet another scandal, namely the Toshakhana scandal, that has caused a ripple in the pond. Notwithstanding the price, gifts received by government officials shall be “reported” and “deposited” in Toshakhana within “30 days of receipt of the gifts” or “30 days from the date of return to Pakistan in case of foreign visit”.  In complete disapproval of the law that has been used as a guise to encourage corruption in the country, top Islamic clerics including Mufti Raghib Hussain Naeemi of Jamia Naeemia, Mufti Imran Hanfi, Mufti Nadeem Qamar, and Mufti Arif Hussain have issued a fatwa stating that Prophet Muhammad had “advised against retaining gifts given to people in positions of power”. Such gifts are considered to be un-Islamic in their eyes, as it should have been used for the benefit of the nation and its people. This issuance of a fatwa has added fuel to the fire in the Toshakhana scandal. The list contains the names of many eminent personalities including President Dr. Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, former prime minister Imran Khan, the late Pervez Musharraf, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and many more. The records show that most of the officeholders retained the gifts free of cost. With the issuance of the fatwa, things have entered a new phase.
