In an unexpected turn of events on Wednesday, Tushar Gandhi, the renowned author and activist, was detained by the Mumbai Police as he stepped out to commemorate Quit India Day.

This incident marks a poignant historical parallel, resonating with the struggles of his great-grandparents, Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, who were arrested by British police on the same day.

Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was detained by Mumbai Police while leaving his house to mark Quit India Day.

Tushar Gandhi took to Twitter to share the unfolding events, revealing his detention at the Santa Cruz Police Station. His words carried a deep pride as he connected his experience with his ancestors' relentless pursuit of India's freedom. He expressed, "For the first time in the history of Independent India, I have been detained at Santa Cruz Police Station as I left home to commemorate 9th August Quit India Day."

The police did not immediately clarify the reasons behind his detention, but Tushar Gandhi's replies to concerned Twitter users shed some light. He mentioned that the planned silent march to August Kranti Maidan, a significant location in India's struggle for independence, was viewed by authorities as a potential threat to law and order.

Undeterred by the situation, Tushar Gandhi reaffirmed his commitment to the cause he set out to commemorate. He stated, "As soon as I am permitted to leave the police station, I will proceed to August Kranti Maidan. Will commemorate August Kranti Din and its martyrs."

Quit India Day
The incident reflects a historical parallel to his ancestors' struggle for independence.

Quit India Day, observed annually on August 9, commemorates the inception of the Quit India Movement. On this historic day, the Indian National Congress passed a resolution demanding the British leave India, setting a pivotal chapter in the nation's fight for independence.

Tushar Gandhi's detention underscores the enduring significance of historical events and the unwavering spirit of activism. As the son of Arun Manilal Gandhi and the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi continues to uphold the legacy of his ancestors through his activism and dedication to the principles of freedom and justice.
