The UK government has
announced that it will review the security of the Indian high commission in
London following two protests in three days by Khalistani supporters. The move
comes after India removed security barricades from outside the British high commission
in Delhi as well as the residence of Alex Ellis, Britain’s high commissioner to
India.

Foreign
Secretary James Cleverly called the acts of violence directed at the Indian
mission staff "unacceptable" and said that the government is working
with the Metropolitan Police to review security at the Indian high commission.
"We will make the changes needed to ensure the safety of its staff,"
Cleverly said.
The protests in London took place on August 15 and 17, with demonstrators
calling for the independence of Punjab and the release of Sikh prisoners. The
first protest saw a large crowd gathered outside the Indian high commission,
while the second protest resulted in four arrests after demonstrators allegedly
assaulted police officers.
India has condemned the protests, calling them "unwarranted" and a
violation of diplomatic norms. The Indian high commission in London has also
lodged a formal protest with the UK government over the incident.
The UK government has assured India that it takes the security of all foreign
missions in the UK extremely seriously and will prevent and robustly respond to
incidents such as this. The UK and India have a long-standing relationship and
are important trading partners, with over £20 billion worth of trade between
the two countries in 2020.
The incident comes at a time when relations between India and the UK are
already strained over the issue of extradition of fugitive businessman Vijay
Mallya. Mallya, who is facing charges of fraud and money laundering in India,
has been living in the UK since 2016 and has been fighting extradition to
India.
The UK government has said that it is committed to upholding the rule of law
and will ensure that Mallya is extradited to India to face justice. However,
the process has been delayed by legal challenges and appeals.
